Jacoby Jones Dance In The EndZone

Entering the playoffs Jacoby Jones became the go to guy for the Raven’s and his clutch speed pulled them through when it counted. The Former Lane College standout nearly broke an NFL record in the second half opening kickoff. Jones hauled a 108 yard touch down return during the Super Bowl XLVII, which is estimated at 11 seconds.  Hyped after the kickoff return TD, Jones imitated  Ray Lewis’ pregame dance in the endzone.

In the first half, Jones drove in a 56 yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco. As it happened, the catch resulted in Jones falling down then getting back up, breaking a tackle, and shaking 49ers’ cornerback Chris Culliver before eventually making his way into the endzone [NFLSpin].

Jacoby’s performance sent a buzz around twitter, as many expected the wide receiver to gain MVP status. The Raven’s out powered the 49ers 34-31.

Her Name is Gabby Douglas: Olympic Gold Medalist

Gabby Douglas, 16, became the first African American to win the all-around competition title at the Olympics and hails as the second American.

Her victory also marked the first time the U.S. women have ever won the team gold and the individual all-around gold in the same Olympics.

Her mother, Natalie Hawkins, made the decision to let Douglas train miles away from the family in Iowa with coach Liang Chow. She began training with Chow, when she was 14, moving from her home in Virginia Beach, Va., to be closer to his gym in West Des Moines, Iowa. She lived in Des Moines with a host family and trained alongside 2008 Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson [USAtoday].

It has been history in the making since.

She didn’t win her first major competition until last month, when she beat world champion Jordyn Wieber at Olympic trials.She signed her first deal, with Procter & Gamble, a few days later [nytimes].

Douglas still has the uneven bars final on Monday, and the balance beam final on Tuesday.

Where was Gabby’s dad during the Olympics? 

Gabby’s dad, Air Force Staff Sergeant Timothy Douglas, who often missed her performances while serving in Afghanistan, was front and center during her big day.

“I’m like, ‘Who’s calling my name?’ And then I look up. It was my dad and his friend, and I haven’t seen him in a while,” Gabby said. “They were holding up the flag. And I almost felt like bawling. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, Dad!” [USAToday]

Heat Rise 104-98 OKC: Mario Chalmers

Key contributions from Mario Chalmers helped the Miami Heat pull away with game 4. Chalmers became the X factor for the Heat knocking down fearless buckets finishing with 25 points. Not forgetting clutch plays (two 3 pointers) from Norris Cole who sparked the Heat off the bench.

This series has been a fourth quarter two transition ball game with seconds ticking. Westbrook carried the weight for OKC offensely with 43 points and 5 assists. Defensively Westbrook grabbed seven rebounds, but made an ill advised foul with his team trailing by three and under 14 seconds to play.

Lebron James led the Heat with 26 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds, 25 points from Wade, and 13 points and nine rebounds from Bosh.

The Heat are now in the cusp of closing out the series with game 5. With the big three scoring in double figures perviously and the proving to be the total package, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Heat claim the series Thursday night (June 21).

Floyd Mayweather $32 Million Dollar Fight

I was sitting at the barber shop when an ESPN commercial ran about the Floyd Mayweather vs Miguel Cotto fight. The commercial sent mayhem inside.

Confidently one barber stated, “Everything will be put to rest tonight,” assuming he was a Mayweather fan. Not quite. He was routing for Cotto.

The other barber laughed and stated you’re crazy. I know how the fight will end, so I’m more excited about how he will enter the ring.

Let’s just say Money Mayweather didn’t fail the hyped entrance. Entering the ring holding Mayweather’s belt was pop star Justin Bieber and hip-hop star 50 Cent.

Mayweather’s $32 million guarantee was not only the largest in the history of Nevada boxing but also the highest in the sport’s history, topping the $30 million Mike Tyson was guaranteed for his ear-chomping rematch with Evander Holyfield in 1997.

To no disappointment Floyd Mayweather won the super welterweight championship title on Saturday (May 5) against Cotto.

Mayweather pulled away to win 118-110 on judge Robert Hoyle’s scorecard, while Dave Moretti and Patricia Morse Jarman each scored it 117-111. ESPN.com had it 116-112 for Mayweather [espn.com]

However, Mayweather has an obstacle to face early next month. He is headed to jail on June 1 for an 87-day sentence at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas for a domestic battery conviction.

Baylor’s Basketball Program Under Probation

The Lady Bears won the national championship with the first 40-0 season in NCAA history.

However, it cost to be the boss.

Baylor women’s basketball team went undefeated on their 2012 season to capture the NCAA National Championship title.

Why is the program under probation?

How Baylor recruited Brittney Griner, one of the most dominant women’s players in college basketball history, was reportedly part of the NCAA probe [yahoo.com].

Kim Mulkey, Baylor women’s head coach, was named AP’s national coach of the year and junior Brittney Griner (6-foot-8) was its player of the year.

After an investigation that led to hundreds of telephone calls and text messages sent to recruits by coaches and assistants on the basketball team, the NCAA put Baylor on three years of probation.

Yahoo reports, all of the penalties were proposed by the school and accepted by the NCAA after a review of nearly 900,000 phone and text message records found that 738 texts and 528 calls were against the rules.

Women’s coach Kim Mulkey received recruiting restrictions, while men’s coach Scott Drew will be suspended for two Big 12 games next season, in addition to recruiting restrictions.

Oden Waived By Blazers, But Expects To Play Again

Remember when the hype surrounded Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. It was back in 2007 when the great debate was over who was the better center Oden (Ohio State ) or Durant (University of Texas).

Portland Trail Blazers drafted Oden over Kevin Durant with the first selection in the 2007 draft.

The hype was later defused as the 7 footer (Oden) played 82 games in five seasons due to injuries.

Portland recently waived the former No. 1 overall pick who averaged just 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots.

Portland also fired head coach Nate McMillan.

According to Oden’s agent, Mike Conley Sr. on Friday, “Oden has expressed interest in playing for the hometown Pacers after he recovers.”

“He shouldn’t have too much trouble finding employment if he recovers. Several teams showed interest in him in March, despite knowing he wouldn’t be immediately available.” [ESPN]

Free Agent Peyton Manning Will Play – #Broncos

Since being released on March 7 from Indianapolis Colts , yahoo reports 4 teams that’s willing to sign Peyton Manning.

The decision for the four-time NFL MVP to play was ill  advised, as discussed in earlier reports.

However,  the Denver Post reports Peyton Manning has narrowed his decision to  four teams and could make a decision as early as today (March 15).

The Denver Broncos are reportedly one of Manning’s top two choices. The Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans are rumored to be next on the list. The Arizona Cardinals also makes the list.

ESPN reports that Manning will meet with The Titans today and spend a day with the Titans’ contingent.

*Updates: Manning signed a major contract (96 Million) with the Broncos, which caused the undoubtedly popular Tim Tebow to receive the boot.

Tebow will reside with the New York Jets while Manning makes Denver his new home.

Manning will get $18 million guaranteed for next season, but must pass a physical before each season, starting in 2013, to get paid.

Durant NBA All-Star MVP: West 152 – 149 East

Lebron James, D-Wade and Blake Griffin attempted to rally the East from behind cutting a 21 point deficit with eight minutes to play on Sunday.

Kevin Durant proved to be the stopping force as the West won 152-149, over the East. Durant posted 36 points in his MVP performance.

Kobe Bryant made noise as well, passing MJ’s (Michael Jordan) career scoring record in the NBA All-Star game with 27 points.

Lebron James, D-Wade and Blake Griffin attempted to rally the East from behind cutting a 21 point deficit with eight minutes to play.

James led the East with 36 points and Griffin added 22. D-Wade managed a triple-double. He finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

LA times reports, Wade joins Jordan and James as the only players with All-Star game triple-doubles.

“With all these great players on the floor, you never know what will happen. Guys making big shots and they cut it down to one. We were up 18 (at halftime),” Durant said [huffingtonpost].

“It was fun. That’s the type of All-Star game you want to see.”

Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love scored 21 and 17 points for the West.

Women’s Basketball Powerhouse “Uconn” Upset

It has been nearly 19 years since Uconn women’s basketball team lost to an unranked opponent.

After a late three pointer, you can now add St. John’s to the record books. The Red Storm’s defeated the Huskies 57-56 last night (Feb. 18). The Red Storm’s late three from Shenneika Smith shut down Uconn’s 99-game home winning streak. Smith nailed the three with 8 seconds left on the game clock.

“It’s truly unbelievable. There aren’t many teams that can say they beat UConn in this place and now we’re one of them,” stated St. John’s head coach, Kim Barnes Arico.

McKenith and Da’Shena Stevens lead the Red Storm’s with 15 points each.

Kaleena Mosqueeda-Lewis scored 12 points to lead UConn.
